Between my new job and moving to a new city, she's waited about a year for her floor pans to be finished.  Currently her body is up on blocks while she waits for her front and rear suspension, brakes, and other parts to be replaced and/or reassembled.  After that the body work begins to take care of the usual lower rot.  Her engine has been hanging from the ceiling of her temporary garage since last fall when we were threatened with a flood.

This car will jump in value in about 2 weeks.  I am having 4 floor pan quarters welded in, as well as all undercarriage rust removed and replaced with new metal.  The paint that is on it is only one year old, but the individual I bought it from had a family member paint it, and let's just say he isn't a professional (door jambs are still original color!).  Everything on this car is original, and all chrome and interior are in perfect condition (even the chrome on both sides of the doors).  The top is in mint condition, as is the headliner, both of which are original.  The engine is the original engine with 103,000 miles, and runs like a dream (oil leak from somewhere, though).  The interior only needs carpet on the driver's side, with no tears in the vinyl.  Dashpad is perfect, glass is perfect, body is perfect, and bumpers are perfect.  In the process of replacing all body rubber and adding a few miscellaneous interior cosmetic that are either broken (back seat catches) or mi!
ssing (passenger side mirror).  Was told by an appraiser (the one that gave me the $5500 value above) that new pans and new paint would boost the value close to $11,000!!  That's pretty good, considering the paint and pan work will only cost me around $5000.

She's been dependable while other cars come and go.  We live in Arizona ,so it's too hot for us in the heat to drive her.   The motor runs like a champ, but she's been very neglected cosmetically.  One tail light needs to be replaced, windshield is pitted, but no cracks.  We have the windshield wipers and motor but not installed.  We have the orginal hubs.We recently had new shocks and alignment.  The clutch needs adjusted/4th gear pops out sometimes.  What we would like to do, is find someone who loves Ghias, to sell her to. She would be easily cherried for someone who could spend the time and money needed...we're just sorry we can't.

'70 coupe, no rust. Crunched pass. side front fender and nose have been replaced with NOS parts (finally -- those are hard to find -- in fact I have a '69 driver's side NOS fender left over) and is ready for paint. Else car (from CA.) is solid but needs interior work. Shows 68000 mi. I suspect that's 168000, but have no way of knowing. Is now silver, was vdub yellow. Will probably be Porsche Zenith Blue. Am hoping to get it on road summer 2000. That would be 10 years in the fixing...

1970 Ghia Cabrio. Appears to have been well restored by a previous owner. Last owner was not very mechanical, but had the car maintained frequently and always parked indoors. Everything seems to be stock, except some of trim has been removed. Also has an aftermarket steering wheel. Car is black, but this is not the original color. No rust! Hooray!Desperately needs a new roof top and headliner, but top frame seems pretty good. I will probably repaint at the same time (just saving up the cash). I also need to do some electrical work & redo the seats.

well to start off my love for ghia started five years prior to getting my own. i rode in the back of one and had to get one. i bought it primer gray with matching numbers, exsept the engine should be a 1600 dual port but got a 1500 single port. the original color was yellow, but now it is black and red (painted by me!) i am still not finished, i want to strip the inside and put in a roll cage and bigger engine. every thing in side and out looks to be original, no rust, but one smashed in rear driver side fender, but was bent out by previous owner. don't know what number owner i am but would like to find out. plus i would like to find out more about my car. any imformation would help. if you know where i could find this out let me know.

Originally Pampas Yellow - Now a high gloss black, my Ghia was built in July of 1970. I purchased the car on July 19th, 2000 for 1500.00 from a gal who had
owned the car for the last 16 years. My Ghia
spent the majority of its life in California and I believe I am the third owner. The car has a couple of small rust spots along the bottom edge and
the nose has been hit. Other than the nose and a few spots here and there the cars in really pretty good shape. I've done a lot of work to her over the last few
months and plan too do much more. I bought the car as a restoration project and will do body work, interior and such as time and money will allow. I use her as my
daily driver and the rebuilt 1600cc, single port engine runs great.

Purchased in Wasilla, Alaska on the street corner.  Body is in bad shape.  Floor pans are totaly rusted out.  Driver seat is about two inches from road.  Rust up front in the spare tire wheel well, rust in the back.  Missing back bumper.  Windshield is cracked. The doors close. I was able to drive it home.  Purchased over $1,600.00 in parts last week in Seattle including floor pans.  I plan to take the body off and work on the frame first.  I have never taken the body off a Ghia. (Any ideas or tricks?) This will be at least a two winter restoration.  The last restoration was a 73, SuperBeetle.(Two winter restoration)  It came out great and just put 3,000 miles on it this summer. My wife wants the Ghia when I'm finished.  She does the seats, and is great at rebuilding the carburetors.  She is a CPA and likes to work with a lot of details as well as numbers.  If anyone has done a complet off body restoration I can use some suggestions on any pitfalls and things to  watch out for.

This 1970 Bahia Red coupe is all original with 54,000 original miles.  Completely stock, no rust, an excellent car.  Other than routine maintenace, the only thing I've done to it is add a Sapphire AM/FM radio.  The antenna lays in the trunk.  I didn't want to drill a hole in the fender to mount it.  Recently I replaced the Continental bias ply tires with custom-made radials that "look" like the original Continental white wall tires.  The paint on this car is incredible.  Most people think it has been re-painted.  It hasn't.  Garage kept all it's life, I do the same and drive it about once a month.  But, since I have the new tires I may take her on a road trip soon.  The car always receives nice comments when I have it out and about town.

This is my third Ghia.  The first two were purchased new in 1967 and 1972.

My car is mostly original. Here's the good: Nice back seat, straight body, good nose, nice chrome, good bumpers, original dash with no cuts, stereo works, nice dash pad, very complete, strong new engine with about 40 miles on it. It's a 1641cc dual port with 2 Kadron (Solex 34 PICT) carbs on it, Bugpack header and muffler, new distributor, new clutch, bigger doghouse fan, new oil cooler, fast valve train. It's got quite a bite. Now, with every good, there's a bad. The bad: torn top on both sides, duck and vinyl taped (very classy), torn headliner, torn vinyl on the front seats, horn ring is cut (ie, no ring), carpet is kinda gross, pan is rusty, battery tray is rusty, some bondo work, some rust on some chrome, couple of small dents, original (faded, primered in places) paint. From far away, it looks pretty good. up close, it's not as great. But, I plan on completing the restoration of this car sooner or later, and when it's done, it'll be sweet.

the driver side floor is gone. and the back bumper is hit, but all in all it is a good little car. a friends dad sold it to me that is why it was so cheap. runs like a top though, so i'm lucky there, but the price for a back bumper, ouch$$$$.it is forest green but was originally orange with the black interior.

Car sat for 23 in storage before being purchased in 99.  It needed brakes and some seals.  I bought it with new brakes and in excellent running order.  It has original floors in excellent cond and only 12000 original miles.  I have all original documentation.  Paint is rough and it needs window and door rubber, otherwise it is very solid.  I plan on painting it and enjoying it for awhile before selling it.

Description (on ebay)
This is a very nice 1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe. It is bright yellow with a  black interior. It has a 4 cyl, 40 horsepower engine with a 4 speed transmission.
This car runs and drives wonderfully, good brakes and all systems work well. It would make a great daily driver. The interior is very nice too. The engine compartment is clean, no oil leaks. The front storage compartment is very clean..  The paint is fairly new and looks great and it has new tires. It is ready to go.  Mechanically this car is in great shape and has always been properly serviced. It looks great too......from a distance. There has been extensive body damage repair.  There is considerable bondo in the fenders and doors. It was damaged in both the front and the rear and some of the repair work was not done very well. The  passenger door needs some adjustment and the doors and the trunk need some realignment. It is owned by an elderly couple and I thinksomeone charged them alot of money for bad work. This car has always been garaged and properly maintained. It is a cute little car and would make someone a nice daily driver. And it does look nice unless you inspect it closely.

THIS IS A 1970 KARMANN GHIA CONVERT. BODY IS BASICALLY STRAIGHT, BUT NEEDS THE USUAL RUST REPAIRS. THE FLOORS SEEM PRETTY SOLID, BUT I DON T THINK THEY WERE REPLACED WITH ORIGINAL TYPE FLOOR PANS. SUPPOSEDLY THE CAR WAS A FLORIDA CAR??? AND WAS RESTORED BY A WOMAN DOWN THERE. SOLD TO A COLLEGE STUDENT AND EVENTUALLY DRIVEN UP TO NEW YORK, WHERE IT WAS STORED IN A BARN FOR MANY YEARS.....I BOUGHT IT TO RESTORE...TOO MANY OTHER PROJECTS!!!! THE CAR IS A TOTAL PROJECT AND NEEDS A TOTAL RESTORATION. AS I SAID THE BODY IS BASICALLY STRAIGHT, WITH PLENTY OF RUST. THE CONVERT TOP SEEMS IN GOOD CONDITION (FRAME AND VINYL). BUT FOR A GOOD RESTORATION IT TOO SHOULD BE TOTALLY DONE. ENGINE IS SEEZED--I WAS TOLD THAT IT RAN WHEN IT WAS PARKED IN THE BARN????? CAR IS PRETTY MUCH COMPLETE, BUT IM SURE IT WILL NEED MANY ODDS AND ENDS. TOTAL PROJECT!!!

Cal look Ghia project, All glass and seals removed for cheap Blue paint job, all glass and new seals included but not installed. Fully polished riviera alloys with chrome 3 bar knockoffs and new 165R/15 tires with 0 miles. Solid body, no signs of damage to the nose or rear end. Front wrap around turn signals filled and brand new clear bullet assemblies are included. I bought the car as a project and haven't had the time to put it together. Includes tons of expensive parts, seals, glass, light lenses, door rubber, wheels and tires, rebuilt trans, includes a complete uninstalled dual port engine with ghia header system and quiet packs, lots of extra cooling tin and fan shrouds. Condition of engine is unknown. New uninstalled carpet kit and headliner. Too much to list. Just the wheels and new rubber seals are probably worth the reserve. Ghia specific stuff isn't cheap.

Very clean, solid body. I've owned quite a few Ghia's and this is probably the best starting point I've seen in a while. The paint is recent but sprayed by a previous owner. I was going to repaint it so I never reinstalled the glass or rubber seals. No damage to nose or engine compartment. One very small rust hole in middle of front passenger floorboard. Pans are otherwise solid. None of the normal Ghia rust problems. No front seats or bumpers, will include chrome "T" bars if buyer wants.

Body-wise, it's very straight but has rust in the usual New  England areas, the quarter and rocker panels will need repair, as will the floor sections. The frame backbone is very sound, this Ghia is indeed restorable... I restore and have restored VWs so I can speak with authority on what is restorable or not. This Ghia has a Bug front axle assembly under it at the moment, it has drum brakes on the front, not the Ghia disc brake setup. There is no engine or transmission in it at the moment, I will provide the winning bidder with a transmission in good condition and a single-port engine complete with tin in rebuildable condition.    orange with some touch-up in places,It needs a paint job. The engine is very new in appearance and I have been told by some "experts" that it is a late model
mexican beetle engine because it is dual releif block, has oem external oil filter and cyl.head temp sensors built in and an extra large oil cooler in the doghouse. I
am not sure but can say it is very clean and strong. All brakes are new including front calipers, rotors, pads and rear wheel cylinders, shoes and adjusters, and
brake fluid flush. One new tierod and tight steering.Like new spun aluminum wheels and tires. Body has very little rust. Includes many new parts.Runs, drives
and stops very well. Now the bad news.....
several small rust holes in front pans (am told they can be easily sealed with fiberglass, needs rear pans. Needs carpet, rubber trim, stainless trim. Needs a rear
bumper (but includes new front and rear chrome bumper mounts.also includes new short shifter kit, parking brake cables and several other misc. parts. I have
tuned it up,and changed oil and spin-on filter. I flushed gas tank and filter. Four oem wheels are also included. E

Have all receipts.  I would be happy to discuss the pitfalls/rewards of restoring your Ghia.  Also, would be happy to share my complete cost list, parts suppliers and service shop recommendations.  tmckinn@hotmail.com

This Ghia was professionally appraised at $17,000 (spent well over that amount on the restoration).  However, market value (the amount the next person is willing to pay) is probably  around $10,000.  Contact me to get a better sense of the TRUE cost to retore this type of vehicle.  Don't buy one (because it only costs $1,000, etc.) and don't start a restoration until you have really honestly researched how much time and money it may take and what you're really willing to put up with.  I can't express this enough:  IT IS FAR CHEAPER (and smarter investment) TO PURCHASE ONE THAT HAS BEEN RESTORED (preferrably by a retentative person that has all receipts) than to do your own restoration.  Check out www.thesamba.com for a great selection of better quality restorations.
